I would be heading out on a two week kayaking trip, which was a major accomplishment compared to the lackadaisical lives my peers were living back home. I met up with four of my closest friends and a leader not much older than us and set out for two weeks of fun, hard work, gorgeous sights, and a technology disconnect. The fact that none of us could call or even send a short text to anyone back home was excruciatingly difficult. I ached to tell my family about all of the breath-taking sights I was seeing. The only communication we had was with each other and the occasional boater. Your mind begins to change when you’re deprived of something you’ve completely adapted to having. You begin to have to get creative with ways to entertain yourself. No playing Angry Birds, no checking your favourite celebrities’ Twitter for a new update, none of that at your fingertips. I began to see the things that were actually around me. Not only was I visually absorbing these sights but I was becoming one with them. I quivered at the storm rolling in from the water because a few hours prior I had no idea it was coming. I laughed at the petty jokes my trip mates told me because there was nothing else funnier. I thanked the water, and the trees, and the ground for being there to support not only me, but my trip mates. […] The trip flew by. Goodbyes and tears were exchanged. We loaded our bags into our separate cars and drove off to whatever reality we had come from. […] When I got home I realized the lack of connection I was feeling came from not being connected physically to my trip mates and to the surroundings that had bonded us together as a family. As a generation we are so busy “connecting” over the Internet that we don’t connect physically. A phone can’t be there for you when you are struggling with depression, or have just experienced the loss of a loved one, or to congratulate you on graduating high school. This is what teens nowadays miss out on. They snap selfies to “remember” the big moments of life without experiencing them. I have experienced what life has to offer and let me tell you, it was far more beautiful than anything I had ever seen on a phone screen.
