Being able to play by ear in multiple keys is also important in improvising and playing in groups that play from lead sheets. 7. As you become comfortable in scalewise practice in all major and minor keys, you can introduce scales in other modes as well during your practice sessions. 8. Finally, mix scale practice into your practice sessions, but don't make them the only thing you do. For example, if you're learning a new piece, start by playing scale and arpeggio exercises in that piece's key before beginning your practice of the written music.
