Three of the south’s football powerhouses – Clemson, u(sic)ga, and Tech – have each had to kick off the season with some uncertainty as to who would be their next QB, thanks to injury and graduation. Yet, despite relative inexperience with regards to the starting QB role, each school has seen their QBs shine under pressure. Here are the three quarterbacks making a difference and shaping the CFB. TaQuon Marshall, Georgia Tech Despite expectation that former Tech QB Justin Thomas’s primary backup, Matthew Jordan, would be tapped to be Tech’s QB starting the season, Jackets football coach Paul Johnson went with Junior TaQuon Marshall to start off the season against Tennessee in the Chic-Fil- A kick-off bowl. Marshall repaid Johnson’s faith in him by putting up one of the best offensive performances by a Tech QB in years, rushing for 249 yards and a school record 5 touchdowns. In the follow-up game against Jackson State, Marshall demonstrated that when the run game was ineffective (only averaging 1.9 yards per carry) behind a tired out offensive line, he could be effective in the passing game, passing for three touchdowns, and currently sports a passing efficiency rating of 246.2. If Marshall keeps up his production, he could be one of the best quarterbacks in Tech history, displaying enviable dual-threat tools. His ability to make plays has been electrifying, and it seems almost silly in hindsight that there was even a question whether he play this season. Marshall is the perfect quarterback for Johnson’s triple option offense, and it’s not difficult to see him leading Tech to great things. Kelly Bryant, Clemson It seemed nearly impossible to fill the void left behind by Deshaun Watson -the former Clemson QB had led the Fighting Tigers to a national championship and just missing out on a Heisman Trophy, big shoes for anyone to fill. But somebody had to do it, and Kelly Bryant turned out to be just the right person. Bryant’s speed, coupled with his cannon of an arm, means that the Tigers can lean on an elite running game while making big plays in the air. As a rookie, Bryant has led Clemson to back-to- back wins over ranked opponents, and even outclassed last year’s Heisman winner, Lamar Jackson, embarrassing the Louisville Cardinals 47-21 last Saturday. Bryant currently ranks 6 th in the ACC to total yardage, and 2 nd in rushing touchdowns (behind Marshall) – Bryant brings a balanced game to the Tigers, and is a strong headline for their offense. While surrounded by one of the best teams in college football, Bryant stands out and makes plays happen. Jake Fromm, georgia It’s one thing to step into a starting QB role as a freshman. It’s a completely different thing to step into a starting QB role as a freshman during a road game against Notre Dame. And yet following an injury to georgia star QB Jacob Eason, that’s exactly the situation that Jacob Fromm faced. And despite the odds against him, Fromm managed to step up as the Bulldogs pulled out a close 20-19 victory against the #24 ranked Fighting Irish. Fromm was not without struggle in that game, as he gave up both an interception and a turnover and only threw for one touchdown. Fromm’s 100.5 QB rating was the worst rating by a u(sic)ga quarterback since Eason’s performance against Tech in the Clean Old Fashioned Hate game last November, and Fromm’s 151.3 rating on the season has been bolstered by feasting upon non-power 5 opponents like Appalachian State and Samford. Fromm still has plenty that he needs to prove going forward, and in the rough-and- tumble SEC East, he’ll need to adapt quickly if georgia wants to succeed.
