This lab focused on measuring deflection in beam bending. The deflection of a beam will be a function of the load applied, the Young’s modulus, the position of the load,and the geometry of the beam. Samples of rectangular cross section made of aluminum and polycarbonate were tested in a standard midspan beam bending test on an Instron machine, followed by a sample of aluminum that had a non uniform shape tested in similar setups. Under the maximum load tested for polycarbonate, 10 lbf, the sample had a maximum deflection of 0.11399 inches, while the aluminum sample under a load of 80 lbf had a maximum deflection of 0.07136 inches. The non uniform bar followed a nonlinear curve of tensile stress compared to position. There was some variation in the results of the tests compared to what was calculated which stems from imperfections in the testing apparatus. Theoretical results and actual tested results were off by a significant margin. The bending of a varying sized sample at different locations proved what loading positions can result in with asymmetric values.
