Theme is an important concept, but sometimes a difficult one. The theme is basically some bigger, broader idea “within”, “under” or “behind” the plot of the story. The metaphorical style of these descriptions (you won’t find the theme by lifting up the book and looking “under” or “behind” it) gives us a hint that theme is not always easy to point at or pin down. Events happen in stories, characters say and do things, places and objects are described, and we can find them on particular pages. Themes are, by definition, more abstract. The places, people, events, actions, words spoken and other specific details of stories can all be seen and pointed out more easily than themes, because a theme is a broader idea or concept that the more specific parts of the story work together to create or carry or suggest.
