The Waluigi memes are funny and all, but I'm in this for more than just the memes. Every sports game where Waluigi is a choice, even Mario Party, I've always chosen Waluigi. My whole life. His antics, his stature, his demeanor, the way he moves, the way he WAHs, the strange things he does for special moves in those games because he appears in nothing much more than those spinoff series are so creative that I can't help but love the guy, despite him being portrayed as evil. Back in 2015 or so, I realised why I liked Waluigi so much. I knew there had to be something more than his hilarity. And there was. Mario, the figurehead for Nintendo, made his debut in 1981. Luigi, his brother, made his debut as a CLONE of Mario to facilitate 2 player gameplay in 1983. Wario, Mario's biggest rival and enemy aside from Bowser, was created in 1992 as an EVIL CLONE of Mario. Finally, in 2000, Waluigi was created as a culmination of all of that. He was made to be an EVIL CLONE of Luigi. A clone of a clone, if you want to simplify things. And then I realised why I and potentially so many other people like Waluigi. Waluigi isn't necessarily evil (especially since all we really have to go on to establish his evil nature is him doing some whacky stuff at sporting events) he's just misunderstood. Misunderstood, and perhaps the most relatable character in the entire Mario franchise. Waluig has existed now for about 18 years, and not once has he gotten a real chance at the limelight. No chances at his own spinoff series. No chance to be a playable character in any mainline series where multiplayer or multiple playable characters were a thing. (In super Mario 64 DS they had Mario, Luigi, Wario, and YOSHI. The perfect opportunity to have all 4 plumbers be playable characters in one game, and they blew it on someone who already had their own established spinoff series) He's just a person in a world he wasn't made to belong in trying to find his place. Just like all of us. And that is why we root for Waluigi. Why we want him in Smash. Why people get so upset to see him not as a playable character but instead as an assist trophy. Waluigi is the underdog in the Mario franchise in the same way we all are the underdog in our own lives. And can we really blame anyone for this? Nintendo has pretty much all but confirmed them going out of their way to make Waluigi anything more than what he has been since his inception. Despite him supposedly being a "villain", he is relatable to us all like a hero. That's why Waluigi needs to be in Smash. To prove that anyone can do anything if they perservere, and to display the greatest underdog story every told.
