The operating room is the place where patients are operated. But often it is the indication of the area in a hospital where, in addition to operating rooms, there is also a room to catch the patients on arrival (the holding) and a room where the patients recover from the operation and anesthesia afterwards, the recovery room ( also called recovery). When it comes to this broader designation, they prefer to speak of the operating room complex or OR center. In most Dutch hospitals, such a complex includes 5-8 operating rooms with approximately the same amount of recovery room beds. In the large centers, the number of operating rooms can be as much as 20-25 operating rooms. The actual operating room is a protected area in the OR center. This screening serves to ensure sterility as much as possible. The most important weapon in this is air treatment and (slight) overpressure. In the operating room, filtered air is blown down above the operating table through a ceiling part of some size (a few meters in the square). Usually the air flow will be so large that the contents of the operating room will be changed twenty times per hour and therefore as clean as possible. The air pressure in the operating room is slightly higher than the surrounding areas, so that air does not flow in when one of the doors is opened. The staff present in the operating room wear special clothing, hats and masks to reduce contamination of the environment. After all, they are the most important source of skin particles with bacteria. The surgical team wears sterile clothing: jackets and sterile gloves, which further reduces the risk of contamination. The operating team consists of various disciplines: surgeons, operating assistants, anaesthesiologists, anesthesia workers and, in heart operations, also clinical perfusionists. Of course, other disciplines are called to the operating room when necessary, such as radiodiagnostic laboratory technicians, radiologists, neonatologists and many specialists who had assigned the patient to the operation. The equipment of the operating room consists of an operating table, anesthesia equipment (monitoring and ventilation machine) and equipment used by the surgeon. In cardiac surgery, a heart-lung machine is used by the clinical perfusionist. It is no exception if ten devices are used simultaneously during an operation. Because these devices are used on the patient, high demands are placed on electrical safety, so that, for example, no leakage currents flow through the patient.
