On July 27, 1956, President Gamal Nasser of Egypt seized control of the Gulf of Tiran and the Suez Canal, closing both to Israeli shipping and nationalizing the latter. This blocked major Israeli shipping routes and posed a threat to British and French oil supply. On October of 1956, Israel saw the blockade as an act of war, attacking Egypt alongside Britain and France. The goal of the British and French was to secure their naval routes by attacking Nasser’s regime, which was condemned by the United States. The Israeli goal was primarily defensive, and to strengthen Israel’s strategic position against neighboring Arab states, while securing passage through the Straits of Tiran. The Arab objective was to attempt to create a full-scale war that could eradicate the state of Israel. Ultimately, the British pulled out due to immense political pressure on November 7th, calling for a ceasefire, which was swiftly followed by the French. This was the official end of the war, but the Israelis did not withdraw until March of 1957, after negotiating for the guarantee of safe passage through the Straits of Tiran, which was enforced along with thee borders of the Sinai Peninsula being patrolled by the United Nations Emergency Force who would resolve Arab-Israeli conflicts. While Egypt had officially won the war, Israel was granted crucial access to passage through the Straits of Tiran, allowing them to have access to trade with Africa and Asia. Additionally, the United Nations force patrolling the Sinai Peninsula were able to keep the peace between Egypt and Israel until 1967, when they were ordered away by Nasser.
