The author of What Leaders Really Do highlighted precise differences in the roles and methods of leaders versus managers. This was the first time that I had really seen the difference between the role of a leader and a manager. When in a position where people are working for or below you and decisions need to be made, different situations call for different approaches to a solution. In my position as a head tutor, there are instances where I should be thinking as a leader rather than a manager of other tutors. For instance, if I can tell that the group is getting frustrated or overwhelmed with their project, I should attempt to refocus their efforts and bring back their thoughts to their central goal. By getting everyone to reevaluate their task and set a new or improved goal, they will likely be much more successful in achieving their goals. In a group setting, this will hopefully align their efforts and they will be able to complete the task on their own. By tackling this situation as a manager, I could help the group individually by come up with a set of tasks for them to complete based on what each of them needed to accomplish, or construct a group problem for them to solve. Without looking for a new method to solve a problem or regrouping, delegating difficult tasks, as a manager would, to be completed does not seem like an effective solution. When it comes to scheduling and coordinating between tutors and faculty, this managerial approach of planning and organizing would be much more effective
