Taniawa emerged from the room where she had been having a discussion with the current lord of the demon realms, Demon Lord Awata, groaning in exasperation. Ugh. Demons these days have gone soft. They know not how to lead, to conquer, to rule. A demon leader who does not wish to subjugate the inferior humans? This would never have happened back in my day, thought Taniawa angrily. Though she was ten epochs old, most would say she didn’t look a day over 20 years. Her age also gave her a different perspective on modern demonic politics, as back in her day, a demonic leader was decided by might and the demonic forces were always prepared for invading the human realms. Now, however, the title was decided by election and most demons were content with lounging about in the demonic realms. These lazy kids. I’ll show them the power of a true demon. Awata is pathetic and unworthy of the lordship. We need a better leader, myself. The demonic realms will be feared once more! With these thoughts, Taniawa prepared to summon her sword, known simply as the Demonic Blade of Taniawa. The blade was pure black, absorbing any light that dared to approach its surface, and seemed to have a dark aura about it. It was well known for granting its wielder near-unlimited power, although this was not strictly true. Instead, it absorbed all forms of energy within a 1 decameter radius and converted them to demonic force, then transferred this force to Taniawa. As demonic force began to coalesce to form the blade, Taniawa thought better of it, realizing that it would be best to summon it at the time of Awata’s assassination and her subsequent installation. She stormed into Awata’s office, where he was surprised by her presence. “You will name me as your successor in the event that you die,” commanded Taniawa. As Awata was about to ask what was forcing him to do this, Taniawa formed her blade. In a voice that was simultaneously alluring and threatening, she spoke, “Awata, dearest. You know that I know where your family are at all times. If you do not agree, I will execute all of them. So agree, and then we can have some fun!” Awata fearfully wrote out this lordly decree and signed it, making it into law. After she had obtained it, Taniawa summoned her blade and cleanly decapitated Awata. In his last moments, his face was one of shock at this sudden betrayal. Her blade absorbed his demonic force into it. Cradling Awata’s head gently, Taniawa whispered in a haunting voice, “You should’ve known better than to trust the Queen of Demonic Force, Awata.” She then transported a human to the office, gave them a sword, and decapitated them, shattering the window from the outside as she did. Shortly after, she shouted in a panicked voice, “Help, help! Awata is dead! A human assassin decapitated him while he was writing a lordly decree!” The bodyguards rushed over and collapsed as they observed the scene. One read the decree and spoke softly, “It appears that the title has passed to you, Lady Taniawa. What do you wish to be called?” Taniawa replied, “Demon Queen Taniawa. Summon the masses. I must inform them of these events.” A day later, all residents of the demonic realms were summoned to the lordly manor, where Taniawa gave a grand speech. Her voice boomed, “Last night, a very sad event occurred in this manor. As our great lord Awata was working in his office, a human assassin entered through his window and sliced his head off. Fortunately, I was nearby and able to execute this brazen assassin, but this would not save Awata. As the last of his demonic force ran out, he wrote out a lordly decree granting me the power of the office. I summon you now to strike back against the belligerent human race. They think that we will not strike back. However, we must avenge Awata. As a result, I have made the decision to declare war on the human realms. Arm yourselves, for we will advance tomorrow.” The residents of the demonic realms were infuriated by these brazen humans, although some doubted the veracity of the events. They were quickly executed, too quick for most to notice. The next day, Queen Taniawa opened the gates to the human realms and the demonic forces prepared to charge through. Taniawa travelled through first and gave a speech to the entirety of the human race. “You have executed our lord and tarnished our pride. For these crimes, you shall perish. Prepare for death, for the Queen of Demonic Force has returned to your minuscule realm and hungers for souls.” Then, switching to her native tongue, she shouted out the words that would herald the end of humanity’s unchallenged reign over the planet of Earth. Speaking both to her troops and to the quivering humans, she commanded, “今。荒廃が始まるよう！” With this, the demonic forces invaded.
