Sir Isaac Newton, an English mathematician, was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He was born on December 25, 1642 (present day January 4, 1643), in Lincolnshire, England, and died March 20, 1727 (present day March 31, 1727) in London, England. He accomplished a lot during his life, such as discovering gravity, writing the 3 laws of motion, and also inventing calculus. After his career as a mathematician, he gained interest in politics and became elected as a representative of the university in Parliament. In 1696 he became master of the Mint. Isaac’s dad died 2-3 months before he was born, and when Isaac was 3, his mother remarried and moved away. Isaac then grew up with his grandmother. After going to local schools, at the age of 12 he went to the King's School in Grantham, England, where he stayed at the house of a pharmacist named Clark. Isaac was interested in Clark’s chemical library and laboratory, where he built lots of different fun devices. After Isaac’s stepfather died, his mother came back to Lincolnshire where she took Isaac out of school and hired Isaac on her family farm. Isaac quickly realized that he would not be a farmer when he grew up. At 19 years old, Isaac attended Trinity College in Cambridge, England. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1665, and planned to stay for his master’s, but a bubonic plague caused the university to close. It was after that time that Isaac decided to pursue in mathematics, physics, optics, and astronomy. During the plague, he had already finished early work on the three laws of motion. The university then reopened and Isaac decided to take a fellowship to obtain his master’s degree. His professor then retired, and Isaac took the job as professor. He was a professor at Trinity for 27 years. Isaac’s main interest at the time was optics. (The study of the behavior of light, or the properties of other forms of radiation.) He wrote lots of lectures about optics, and devoted himself to optics for years. He revised the telescope, and built some models to show the refraction of light. Later, he composed all his lectures about optics into a book, which was published in 1704 after 3 revisions. In 1687, Isaac completed his major work, “Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica”. This book included not only the explanation of gravity, but the three laws of motion, and the creation of calculus. The book took him 18 months to write, and was originally published in Latin. It contained many answers to questions scientists and mathematicians had at the time, including questions about planetary motion, and universal gravitation. After he finished the book, he lost focus in mathematics, and became a member of Parliament. He was elected representative of the university in Parliament, and later left Cambridge to become the warden, then master of the Mint. Newton was just as intent there as he was as a mathematician, and made very effective changes to the Mint. During Isaac’s final years, he made revisions to books he made years before. In 1706, he published a Latin version of his book “Optiks”, and in 1718 he published an english version. In both publications, he barely tweaked the originals. In 1713, he made a second edition of the “Principia” edited by Roger coates. In 1726, a third edition of the “Principia” came out, this time edited by Henry Pemberton. Isaac’s niece and her husband lived with Isaac until he died on March 20, 1727 (present day March 31, 1727). In conclusion, Isaac Newton was a fun mathematician to research. He discovered many key elements of math, and set the way for future mathematicians. He once said, “My powers are ordinary, only my application brings me success.” To me, that means that everyone can do anything, but only the devoted will actually complete it.
