Searching for Evidence of Uniform Motion In Each Third of a Car’s Journey By Evalynn Bogusz Group Members - A. Byakod, S. Nadimpalli, P. Nair Date - 10 September 2019 INTRODUCTION Uniform motion means a period of time with a constant velocity. The purpose of this lab was to look for evidence of uniform motion during each part of a cart’s journey. Evidence of uniform motion was searched for in each of three sections of a cart’s journey (the first third, the second third, and the third third). If the change in displacement was constant over each interval of time, then evidence of uniform motion would be found. The independent variable in this lab was which third of the journey was measured. The dependent variable was the distance between sparks. The speed setting of the spring propulsion system on the cart, the distance of the cart’s journey, and the surface it traveled on were kept constant. The control value for finding evidence of uniform motion was 15 consecutive equidistant (±0.5 mm due to our measurement limitations) sparks. It was hypothesized that if we measure the distance between the sparks for each third of the journey, evidence of uniform motion accurate to 1 millimeter per tick would be found in the first and second thirds of the journey because as the cart slows down, random negative accelerations due to bumps and mechanical friction will make more of a difference at lower velocities. A ticker tape timer, which continually makes sparks on a piece of ticker tape every “tick” (a unit of time less than a second), was used to measure the distance a spring-powered cart traveled over each “tick”. Evidence of uniform motion was searched for in the first 0.5 meters, the second 0.5 meters, and the third 0.5 meters of the cart’s 1.5 meter journey over a level surface. According to our hypothesis we would expect uniform motion to be evident in the first and second 0.5 meter segments. It was important to make sure the surface the cart traveled on was level, so that there would be no gravitational acceleration acting on the car, and uniform throughout the journey, because differences in surface would change the amount of friction the cart was experiencing. Initial velocity and distance of the journey were also important to keep constant throughout the trials for consistency and repeatability.
