Safe as houses summary Lizzie babysits the McBride children every school day until the McBride parents get home. On Friday though, the rain is pouring and doesn’t stop. The McBride's call and say that they will be late because of the storm, and then things get scary. After a few hours, the power goes out, along with the phones. The river starts overflowing and gets into the McBride lawn. Not much later, the water reaches the house, and it’s coming quickly! The children scramble onto the rooftop, narrowly escaping drowning. Soon, a house drifts away, and the McBride’s is next! The children cling onto a flimsy tree, and after many long hours, they are rescued. In 1954, hurricane hazel ripped through Toronto and flooded the Humber River. Many were affected by it, just as the story tells.
