The ¨Throw Away Culture¨ of today's America is a true problem and growing problem, causing tons waste of valuable materials, and covering mass amounts of land with trash in landfills. Packaging companies are known for their mass amounts of waste of material, and using non-biodegradable material in their products, knowing full well that their product will later sit in a landfill for centuries. Near the beginning, The Onion creates a satirical view on the subject at hand, which allows the reader to visualize the problem of over packaging. In the article, an excerpt reads ““Hey, you know what, I did a pretty good job shielding that Vitamix during that three-day trip,... ”” This quote shows for many reasons how the Onion weaves their point into a satirical and effective point. For example, in this quote, The Onion states that the packaging took a three-day trip in order to deliver their package. This is a very satirical take on the subject because it taunts the companies and people who over package their products in order to draw the reader in, and to be more persuaded by their argument. Later in the article, The Onion very clearly and outright mocks the amount of time used to produce the material vs. the actual time the product will decompose in a landfill. In the article it states: “Having put in 46 hours of hard work as sturdy packing material, a local block of Styrofoam is about to spend the next 500 years reflecting on how well it protected a blender in transport...”. Clearly, The onion uses irony to point out the fact that this styrofoam which takes a mere 46 hours to make compared to the staggering 500 years it requires to decompose is completely ridiculous. The Onion uses this fact of irony in order to create a strong bias which readers attach to, and begin to further dislike large corporations who operate without being conservationally minded. Finally, In order to display sarcasm, The Onion attacks many industries on the fact that overuse of packing materials is astonishing, and uses this fact to degrade them with a quote: “The Styrofoam went on to say it was grateful to have so much time to swap stories about the shipment with the plastic sheet the blender had been wrapped in.” This very sarcastic statement deteriorates any reason large companies would have for use of too much packing material, and cause the audience to fully believe The Onion’s argument, and to support them later in life. Clearly, The Onion excels at communicating their point through use of irony, satire and sarcastic tone.
