Rishil Patel 9/25/18 Period B Dangers Of Conflict Conflict is like a hurricane. In hurricanes, there is immense destruction and a quiet eye. In life, there are endless enemies but also numerous friends. Conflict can happen with all, whether it is the sea, people, or their own self. Rainsford, the main character in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, has a conflict with nature, himself and another man. Man versus nature can happen in many ways, whether it is against the sea or the sky. Rainsford is on a yacht and cannot sleep. He goes to the deck, climbs on the rail to see a nearby island, and falls off the boat. “For a seemingly endless time he fought the sea”(10). Rainsford first has to fight the wash from the yacht while screaming to alert the people onboard. The wash fills his mouth with salt water. The salt water makes him gag and struggle to get it out. In the freezing water, Rainsford has to swim the distance to the faraway island. He has a true struggle against the sea as he barely manages to swim past sharp rocks and onto the shore. In other words, Rainsford struggles against nature to get to an island, where he does not know what awaits him. Rainsford reaches the island and spots a humongous house. He knocks on the door and meets General Zaroff. Zaroff tells Rainsford about his love for hunting men and Zaroff challenges him to a game. “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine”(18). Rainsford has to use his brains, woodcraft, strength and, his stamina to escape Zaroff. Zaroff, the predator has alerted his prey to a game of mouse and cat. Rainsford has to trek his way through the harsh and discordant island in order to escape Zaroff. The man vs. man conflict sets Rainsford on edge, being the hunted after all that time of being the hunter. On the other hand, Zaroff is overconfident that he is going to win. Rainsford has a crucial man vs. self decision to make to ensure his own survival. He kills a hound that belonged to Zaroff, allowing Zaroff to know where he is. Rainsford has a major decision to make in order to ensure his survival. ¨He could stay where he was. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable. For a moment he stood there, thinking¨(22). Rainsford has a large decision to make in order to survive. He has two options and both end with getting himself killed. Rainsford has a man vs. self conflict with this important decision. No matter what he does, it ends with him dying. He comes up with a new idea that could make sure he survives. Rainsford has to be brave, but it is the only way out of Zaroff’s snare. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford has a conflict with himself, nature and another man. Rainsford’s fight with nature is a long trek through the cold sea to Ship-Trap island. In man vs. man, Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a game of cat and mouse. In man vs. self Rainsford has to make a large decision to keep living., If Rainsford had not met Zaroff, they would not have a conflict. The plot therefore could not progress. The whole storyline would be extremely different. For instance, Rainsford had to trek through the island. If Rainsford was not escaping Zaroff, he would not have to travel through the island. Similarly, Rainsford does not have to keep a daylong vigil. The man vs. man conflict of Rainsford and Zaroff entirely changes the plot.
