New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke for 90 minutes on Independence Day, it was a long speech by a leader by today’s standards. However, in the history of long speeches, his address wouldn’t even be an also-ran. From a critique of capitalism to India’s impassioned defence of Kashmir, a TV show performance and a budget speech, we bring you a list of the five longest speeches in political history. The honour is shared by communist leaders, career diplomats and finance ministers alike. 1) India’s former finance minister V.K. Krishna Menon’s speech in 1957 explaining India’s position on Kashmir for over seven hours is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest speech delivered at the United Nations (UN). (2) The second longest speech at an international forum is again at the UN and was delivered by Cuban leader Fidel Castro in 1960. It lasted four hours and 29 minutes. Castro bettered his own record in 1986 when he spoke for seven hours in Cuba. (3) Stewart Stevenson, a Scottish parliamentarian in 2004 delivered a speech lasting 23 hours and 51 minutes on International Suicide Prevention Week. We don’t know whether the length of his speech caused some of his fellow MPs to ponder over the longevity of their lives. (4) Senator Ted Cruz spoke for 21 hours 19 minutes in the US Senate in 2013 against Obamacare. His speech was interrupted with remarks by other senators of his party. (5) Sir Ivan Lawrence spoke for over four hours in 1985 during a debate on water flurodization in 1985, making it one of the longest speeches ever of the 20th century in the British Parliament. Other also-rans in this list include Hugo Chavez, who once spoke for eight hours on his TV show.
