Mystery lures the reader to join in the adventures of The Hidden Treasure of Glaston by Eleanore M. Jewett. The year is 1171, and twelve-year-old Hugh finds himself in a monastery in Glastonbury, England. This is his now his home, and from here journey begins. In his search to solve the mystery, Hugh grows into a responsible, persevering, and religious young man. During his time at the monastery, Hugh shows his developing sense of responsibility by what he says and does. Once, Hugh was responsible when he helped his father's friend Jacque escape from the mob and get to the monastery. Again, Hugh was responsible when he volunteered to travel in place of Brother John, to fetch (the assumed stolen) Seynt Graal from Sir Walter and minstrel Maurice. Last, instead of going off to be a knight Hugh instead stayed in Glaston to write the book to replace Seynt Graal, and to help rebuild the monastery. Throughout the book, Hugh became remarkably responsible and dependable. Hugh demonstrates perseverance many times by what he says, thinks, and does. First, Hugh was crawling in the secret underground shaft for a long time without any kind of break and he didn't complain. Second, Hugh was determined to go to the king to retrieve the lost book. Even when through the rain, the dark, and the mud. Later, he was determined to deliver the note from the bandit leader and ask about Seynt Graal in person, even though the guards tried to deter him. In conclusion, Hugh is perseverant. In his first days at Glastonbury Abbey, there is no evidence that Hugh is pious, but, by the end of his journey, Hugh shows by his thoughts, words, and actions that he is a religious young man. When Hugh was in the Marshes of Avalon, he got lost and panicked, then he said a prayer, recollected himself, then he saw a vision telling him where King Arthur was buried. Second, Hugh was in the burning chapel trying to get Brother John out of the chapel, then he asked God for strength and he carried Brother John into the secret underground vault to safety. Lastly, after Hugh had seen the Holy Grail, his limp was healed, he regarded it as a miracle. In closing, over time Hugh proved himself to be particularly pious. Though Hugh arrived at the monastery as a sobbing boy, his adventures for a noble cause helped him to grow into a responsible, persevering, and religious young man. Being stuck in the marshes helped Hugh gain piety. The search for the Holy Grail helped Hugh grow in responsibility. Many of Hughs adventures caused him to grow as a person, whether he liked it or not.
