My name is Nicholas Spacht. I am 17 years old and a Senior at Cherokee High School. I am deaf. I want to go to attend the RIT because I am very interested in technology! I love to play video and computer games, but I know technology is so much more than that. There are so many jobs out there using technology. I want to learn about them. I love to think of new things that technology can do, such as cars that drives themselves or glasses with captioning in them, so I don’t have to rely on an interpreter. This college will help me with my career goals by letting me explore different aspects of technology. Maybe I will make those glasses someday! I attended the Droids and Drones camp which it helped give me an experience I have never had before. I don’t have many deaf friends. My school is made up mostly of hearing students. I have a very small group of deaf and hard of hearing friends. Some of my friends know a little sign and some don’t. I am the only one in my grade who is deaf. I utilize an interpreter. I think it would be an awesome experience to be in an environment where everyone is like me. Where I can spread my wings, use my ASL and have no barriers to communication or learning. I also think it would be fun! In high school, I take Broadcast/Video class which is school news. I participate many different jobs such as editor, graphic designer, producer of segment, control room, camera-op, and anchor. I am the only deaf student there. It does not hinder me from working with hearing students. In the clip I am in, I use sign language without my voice and added subtitles when I edit the video. Every time I Sign in the video, sound is off but there are only subtitles. The reason for that is to let hearing people to switch their role to the deaf person from hearing person where they rely on their ears. It makes them pay attention to the segment part where I sign without sounds which they must rely on their eyes instead of their ears. I am trying to figure out what I want to do after I graduate. I know it will be in the technology field. If I could attend RIT, it will allow me to see what it is I want to do. I am thinking a lot about what to do for a career. I think this will not only allow me to explore technology but to see what it would be like to be in a totally deaf environment, where my language does not inhibit me. Where the fact that I am deaf does not matter. My parents and teachers tell me deaf can do anything. I believe that! I think RIT can help me do anything.
