My engineering teacher possessed all the best qualities of a teacher. He was an engineer himself, so he had a vast understanding of the class. He could teach us through his own experiences in his field of work, which gave us a real life picture of the subject, making it easy to understand. He was also able to relay what he knew to us through videos and projects that were all entertaining, allowing us to stay engaged and want to know more. The class was always fun and we all always looked forward to it, so even when we had a lot of work we were ready to do it. He had both of the qualities that make up a good teacher, which are having complete knowledge of what is being taught, and having the ability to get their students to understand what they are teaching. Most teachers know a lot about what they are teaching, but only some of my teachers have had a complete understanding of what they were teaching. For example, my history teacher knew everything off the top of his head for every time period throughout the year. He was not necessarily my favorite teacher, but he definitely had this first quality down. He never taught out of a book, and whenever we had a question about something, no matter how specific and detailed, he could immediately answer the question. This is helpful because whenever you had any type of question, whether it was on what was just taught or from a few weeks ago, you could get a detailed answer right away. It also allowed him to get through his lessons quickly since he never had to refer to other places to get information. The second quality is more important than the first. You can know all you want about something, but as a teacher that does not matter if you can not get your students to understand most of what you are teaching. My science teacher did a great job of this. Whenever we started a new topic, we would start by taking notes. But after we got an overview of the topic we would do so many hands on activities that could only be done if we fully understood what we were doing. This allowed us to figure out what we did not get so we could ask him, and then finish whatever activity we were working on. We would also get a full review day before tests where he would give us a long, but very helpful study guide. Whatever we still did not fully understand from the unit would could most likely be figured out by completing the review guide. So, the qualities that make up an excellent teacher are a full understanding of the subject and the ability to be able to relay their knowledge to their students.
