It also allowed him to get through his lessons quickly since he never had to refer to other places to get information. The second quality is more important than the first. You can know all you want about something, but as a teacher that does not matter if you can not get your students to understand most of what you are teaching. My science teacher did a great job of this. Whenever we started a new topic, we would start by taking notes. But after we got an overview of the topic we would do so many hands on activities that could only be done if we fully understood what we were doing. This allowed us to figure out what we did not get so we could ask him, and then finish whatever activity we were working on. We would also get a full review day before tests where he would give us a long, but very helpful study guide. Whatever we still did not fully understand from the unit would could most likely be figured out by completing the review guide. So, the qualities that make up an excellent teacher are a full understanding of the subject and the ability to be able to relay their knowledge to their students.
