My disagreement with the authors has many manifestations in reality as well. The “mid-life crisis” has come to be recognized as a normal part of life. Is it really normal? A man gets a wife, family, and job only to realize that he has oriented his whole life to one goal. Now he sets his sights on another goal, a sports car for example, only because that is all he knows how to do. Michael Phelps infamously spiraled into drugs and alcohol after winning countless medals at the Olympics. Is it coincidence or is it that he (along with the authors) has wrongly placed pursuit (whatever the pursuit is) as his central meaning in life? Only liars and the blind would claim the former, and we as a society need to recognize the truth of the latter.
