Līvia: māter ēloquens is a novella about Livia, a Roman mother who enjoys public speaking. Although Livia knows that Roman mothers are expected to wear stolas and prepare dinners, she prefers wearing togas and spending her time declaiming eloquently to a statue. Meanwhile, she tries to hide these secrets from others, such as her two children, Sextus and Drusilla; her friend, Agrippina; and her brother, Gaius. Livia has almost been caught on multiple occasions practicing her public speaking to a statue while wearing a toga, but she had always managed to conceal her actions from others, as it was not Roman mothers, but Roman senators, whom society allowed to do these things. The overall storyline itself is unbelievably bland and lackluster. The plot constantly repeats the same scenario regarding Livia’s attempts to hide her secret from others. In fact, the only differences they have are the person Livia speaks to and the basic premise of the situation. At one point, the story attempts to create a plot twist by having a robber steal some of Livia’s possessions, including her only stola. Thus, she had to go into public wearing a toga to find the robber and take back her belongings. However, this problem is quickly resolved after Gaius returns Livia’s toga when the robber was captured. Conveniently, it also happened to be nighttime, when no one could even see what Livia was wearing. The tidy resolution to this problem renders this twist utterly ineffective as a plot device to spark even the most remote feeling of interest in the story. Finally, what seems to be the climax of the novella is predictable, mundane, and downright awful. It has little action or excitement whatsoever and follows the same trite structure of Livia keeping her secret safe from the knowledge of others. The one difference this time, however, is that she fails to do so. One would expect this to be an earth-shattering event for Livia, but on the contrary, her life remains wholly unaffected. The lack of a plot which entices the reader, combined with failed attempts at inducing action and a lousy anticlimax, reveal how Līvia: māter ēloquens is a disappointment of a novella.
