Whether it was used to spread awareness to something traumatic or to act as a lesson to its readers. For most memoirs, the author chooses to tell their story in a chronological fashion, whereas for Marina Nemat’s Prisoner of Tehran, she chose to use a different approach. Rather than using the traditional method, Prisoner of Tehran tells its story in alternating chapters for the majority of the book. The unique style of alternating chapters inside Evin prison and the protagonist’s childhood highlights the sense of time passing in the author’s experience. The frequent change in setting and the sense of time passing allows the readers to draw a deeper connection to Marina as a person than simply as a character. Furthermore, the different ways Nemat chose to transition the two settings are also crucial to the development of characters in the book. In the chapters of Marina’s life in prison, the mood of the story is relatively unchanged throughout her stay. These chapters allows the readers to see the burden that Marina has to deal with on a daily basis. Although she was taken through multiple areas of the prison, the tone is still present everywhere within the prison. Whether it is her walk in prison where “The air smelled of sweat and vomit.”(Nemat 12) or her transfer to room 7. Evin prison emits this feeling of sadness both to its prisoners and to the readers. Although this feeling of sadness can be interpreted as a sign of hopelessness, it is also used by Nemat as a tool to gain sympathy from its readers. Allowing the readers to sympathize with the main character is also another method that was used to let readers build a deeper connection to Marina. While the prison environment conveys a feeling of hopelessness on its own, the writing style that Nemat used for this memoir effectively balances it with hope while still maintaining its effect on creating pathos. Every chapter about Marina’s childhood gives off warmth and hope despite the events they describe may not be the happiest of her memories. Although Marina’s story about her childhood includes the deaths of many, the way Nemat described the stories are still in a hopeful tone. For example, although the closest family member to Marina, her grandmother passed away early on in her life, she left behind writings of her life story as a symbol for hope. In addition, as “Bahboo” said to Marina, “You have to know that death is only a step we have to take to reach the other world and live, only in a different way.” (Nemat 34). Her death itself was a depressing moment for both Marina and the readers, yet it still gives hope because it acts as a lesson that teaches Marina the attitude she needs to have when facing challenges. However, her death does not negate the pathos the other setting creates in anyway, instead, it builds even more connection to the readers as death is something that everyone has or will experience. After producing countless novels and releasing countless movies, humans have grown desensitized to the events they describe. Although the stories they tell may be non-fiction, overtime people started to only see the characters as dolls that entertain them rather than real human beings. The heartwarming moments in Marina’s childhood is an attempt to stop its readers from thinking this way. Having only the chapters from prison will most likely make the work less powerful as Marina as a character will be distant to the modern society since her experiences in prison will be a relatively foreign concept to the western culture. The fact that Nemat chose to include her childhood before she was arrested is one of the reasons that made Prisoner of Tehran have such an impact on the world. With the death of Marina’s grandmother as example again, the connection she had with Marina is one that most people would be familiar with. This relationship is the reason why it was able to create pathos on top of what was already done with the other setting. In addition to the different settings, the sense of time passing is also a crucial element to the development of Marina as a character. The time gaps between her family life chapters are significantly longer than the gaps between her prison life chapters. The story of her grandmother’s death and the story of Albert’s bookstore had months or even years in between while her prison life had little to no gaps. The difference in this is a parallel for her life in those two conditions, her daily life in prison is long and dull. This also highlights the severity of Marina’s sentence, since the readers are able to get an understanding to how unbearable the life is for her inside Evin.
