In the Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe, Prince Prospero locks himself and his closest friends in one of his castles. He has 7 rooms which go from the color blue to a deep black with red windows. In this room there's a black clock that chimes every hour causing the party guests to stop dancing and laugh nervously. At midnight a masked figure appears dressed to look like he has the deadly disease the Red Death from which the guests and the prince are hiding. Prince Prospero yells for the man to remove his mask and show himself but the man just walks all the way down to the black room. The price rushes after him but when he gets close he ends up falling dead. In an act of courage the rest of the party goers run at the man to try and take his mask off only to find that this is the real Red Death.
