In the film in 2005, the spa bath in Ibsen's original version was replaced by a drinking water source. TV celebrity and nutrition physiologist Tomas Stockmann has long lived in Oslo, but ends in the job because the production company does not give him editorial freedom. Tomas will move back to the hometown to sell the spring water in the bottle. A woman joins because she thinks it will restore her father's and her bad reputation to her home. Together with his brother Peter, Tomas builds up what is expected to become a cornerstone company in the small Westlands city. All citizens of the city put their savings and dedication to the company, and Tomas is received as a full-time resident. Shortly before the launch, Tomas is told that Peter has hidden a report that shows that drinking water is harmful to health. Everyone who drinks the water can become sterile. Tomas will shut down production until they can make use of a clean source further into the mountain. But this will cost money, so Peter and the rest of the city are against. In the film, Petra is information manager and not Tomas Stockmann's daughter as in Ibsen's play. She tries to help Tomas, but gets fired by Peter later. Even the journalist talks about the poisons when Peter threatens an expensive trial. A woman who has long supported Tomas will also hide the case because the dye's plant is probably the cause of the contamination. There will be a big "public meeting" on national television, where both the inhabitants of the village and the viewers can vote by telephone on which Stockmann they support. The movie ends with several of the city's residents knocking Tomas. The chief of police asks him to leave the city. Thus, the movie ends more openly than Ibsen's plays.
