In the beginning of the story the boys were civilized by going to school, they had adults to tell them things guide them through their daily routine, and other helpful figures, but later the boys start to turn into savages. Since the boys are stranded on an island and don't have an authority figure there is no one to keep them in line, keep them healthy and hygienic. One way to prove that they have turned savage-like, is when it says, ‘“I cut the pig’s throat,” said Jack, proudly,”(Golding 69). This shows how bloodthirsty and obsessed with killing Jack became. He even started to go as far as to paint his face, describing it as, “an awesome stranger”(Golding 63). Another way to prove they’re turning savage was when Ralph was saying, “Now people seem to use anywhere. Even near the shelters and the platform. You littluns, when you’re getting fruit; if you’re taken short—...“I said if you’re taken short you keep away from the fruit. That’s dirty!”(Golding 63). The littluns were surviving on their own, they did not have much guidance on most things, especially not on what food to eat. They were eating unripe fruit, causing them to need to go to the bathroom frequently, and near the shelters, and anywhere else. The final reason that proves that they turned savage is, that many of the kids on the island had long hair. This proves that the boys focused more about surviving than day to day living. The author's choice to write about the deterioration of these boys civilization is interesting. How far will the author take the decline of rules and authority? What is the author trying to teach the readers about respect, rules and authority?
