In Lao Cai, Viet Nam, teachers and students take preventative measures on the first day of resumption, May 11. These measures, dubbed “new habits”, aim to make schools safer for everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic. After a prolonged hiatus since the Chinese New Year at the end of January, more than 22 million Vietnamese students have started returning to school. In order to reopen, schools had to comply with a list of safety standards established by the Ministry of Education and Training to prevent the spread of infections. This list included environmental and food hygiene measures, medical and sanitation equipment (such as thermometers and soap), temperature measurement, mask wear and appropriate physical distancing in class. With support from UNICEF, all 43,966 schools nationwide have implemented safety protocols to facilitate the return of students and teachers to school.
