Ian Williams 1 Solomon World Cultures March 4 2018 Should The US Have Dropped the Bomb The United States was correct in its decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it ended the war sooner saving american lives, and it was the only way to force a Japanese surrender. The atomic bombs were inhumane, but so is everything in war and so by dropping the bombs the United States minimized casualties on their part and ensured that Japan couldn’t keep fighting, During World War Two Japan got a reputation for itself for not surrendering under any circumstances which became more and more of a problem for the Americans as the war went on. At the time of World War Two there was no evidence of a Japanese surrender in thousands of years. This led to military leaders believing that total destruction was the only option. The atomic bombs had been tested but never used in war. Dropping them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a good decision because it showed the rest of the world how destructive they can actually be. Without this there could have been a chance that another country would use a more powerful weapon in the future which would have been much more destructive than the ones used against Japan. By dropping the bombs the United States saved lives in the end because if they had not dropped the bomb then there is reason to believe the Japanese would have kept fighting causing casualties on both sides. While the bombs killed many Japanese citizens they also saved hundreds of thousands of Japanese military lives. In conclusion the United States was morally correct to drop the bombs on Japan because it saved military lives, forced an otherwise questionable Japanese surrender, and it showed the world just how cruel atomic bombs are. The pros outweigh the cons in this scenario and that is worth it.
