I was doing open heart surgery on a mouse in a lab. It was unconscious and taped spread-eagle to a surgery board. During the surgery (after I had already gotten to the open heart part), it began twitching a bit. This meant that the anesthetic was started to wear off. This was not unusual, it just meant that it was time to inject more. I turned away to prepare a syringe, but when I looked back, the mouse was fully awake. Its twitching was extreme now. Because it was strapped by it's limbs, its torso was the only thing that could move. Its torso was thumping up and down. SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! I panicked. Giving it more anesthetic would be impossible at this point. It was going to die one way or another. My thinking was "I need to put it out of it's misery as soon as possible". There are established humane ways to kill a mouse quickly. But I was panicking. I grabbed the closest sharp object, which was a scalpel, and began stabbing. Unfortunately my aim was poor and the mouse was not instantly killed. Instead, the small incision near its heart tore open all the way down to its crotch. And then I witnessed the single most disturbing moment that I had ever seen before, or since. It's intestines exploded out of its body onto the table, onto the floor, and towards my face. And it was still alive. SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! Each smack flung more and more intestines out of its body. I gained the sense to snip its spinal cord just below the skull, and it finally died. I wish I could unsee that tragedy, but sadly the image is forever burned into my brain. Edit: I fixed my incorrect usage of "it's" instead of "its". Also I forgot to mention that in addition to what I saw, the sounds and smells also haunt me to this day.
