I believe that the education system is designed to be a collaborative experience while also naturally having a power structure in the classroom. This is the major contradiction-complementation (fake word!) that I see in the modern schooling systems. What I mean by this is that a classroom that succeeds well will have a collaborative pool of ideas and thoughts that work towards the same goal: to learn the material and to master the craft. However, while there will always be the need to have collaboration and free thought, there is a constant struggle of being a “person with knowledge” educating “people without knowledge.” By the very nature of these facts, a structure of power (teacher vs student) is implied in the classroom and turns into a dominating force in the classroom environment. I believe the only way to avoid such a contradiction in the system is to purposefully frame the classroom environment, whether it be class layout, lesson planning, or pedagogy, to enhance the student-centered learning.
