“HOPE, ANGER” A One Scene, one act ,one performer,theatrical production penned by Jude Smith based off discussions of activism during the Oct. 17. 2024 meeting of Express it Through Words —--------------------------------------------------------------- Characters: the human =-=------------------------------- Set: an empty section of the case high school library. On the floor sits a small blue stool and a chromebook. Time: Modern Day (THE HUMAN enters from behind the bookshelf.) THE HUMAN: The world… the world today. Why do we have to fight? Why must we bang the drums of war? If Martin Luther King Jr. were still alive today, would he approve of this? (THE HUMAN moves the stool a bit further downstage) THE HUMAN: I do not believe so. If we were to change the world, we must fight and strike our war. We must unban the banned books. We must start anew. (THE HUMAN picks one of the books and begins to read it) THE HUMAN: Books such as this, shall help us dance into a new age. THE HUMAN: We must fight for our unity. We must fight for our society. We must fight against the hatred. THE HUMAN: There will not be a new age unless we fight, not with our actions but with words. THE HUMAN: We must all stand together in the great circle. The circle of unity. We must fight against ableism, fight against racism, homophobia, sexism, and every evil that exists. (THE HUMAN paces.) THE HUMAN: But how do we do this? How do we fight when we haven’t a weapon? How do we fight when we haven’t a voice? I believe the answer is thus- we must all see each other as equal. We must all see each other as human beings. For if we do not, the world will grow even more divided. Even more vile. Even more hostile. That shall not stand. The anger shall not stand. What shall stand is the hope. The great and glorious hope that keeps us human. The hope that keeps the world from falling apart. We must all stand as one. (THE HUMAN bows, then exits.) END OF SCENE.
