Her decision had been shown quickly. But it had been made after days and nights of thought. She had known she would be asked. And she had decided what she would answer. And she had moved her hand to the right. At first, there was nothing, but as the young man’s eyes strained into the darkness he could hear a faint jingle. Was it the sound of the tiger's restraints or the sound of beads on a beautiful lady’s dress? He would soon find out. As the jingling grew closer, the young man became more nervous, but then the jingling came to an end. Now all that could be heard was the slight murmur of the audience, waiting to see the fate of the young man. He reached into the darkness, hoping for the warm touch of a woman, instead he was met with the wet nose and hot breath of a fierce tiger. The young man slowly stepped backwards, as if not to alarm the beast of his presence. The princess looked to her feet, unable to watch what would soon happen to the man she loved. It was silent, everybody in the arena waiting to see what would happen next. Then, a cruel and hateful snarl broke the silence. A tiger emerged from the darkness, its pelt covered in scars from past battles. The fierce beast's eyes were cold and dark, staring right into the soul of the young man. The crowd became alive, screaming in both horror and grief. The young man walked backwards faster, not daring to break eye contact with this beast. Soon he reached the edge of the arena; he was cornered and there was nothing he could do about it. He stared helplessly at the princess, knowing she was the one who chose this for him, yet feeling no resentment towards the princess for it. As the princess stared back into the desperate eyes of her lover, she felt guilt tear through her body. She felt hot tears stream down her cheeks but made no move to stop them. She wanted, needed, to stop this, but she knew deep down that she couldn’t. She was the one who did this, and now she has to live with it. Looking one last time at the princess, the young man closed his eyes. The tiger began feasting on the young man, blood dripping down its chin. The princess let out a sob, knowing that she would have to live with the guilt of killing her lover forever.
