YOU SAID:

Hello Staff, Parents, and Students, Where to begin? These are unprecedented times. Obviously the decision to shut down the schools through April 7th is hugely disruptive, but in the end, I believe these aggressive efforts to “flatten the curve” will help our health care system be better able to service those who will need it the most. This email is going to have a lot of information: I have tried to organize it into sensible chunks below. On-line Learning Teachers are putting together enrichment resources for students to complete during the shutdown. While not graded, the assignments are important to complete in order to stay engaged with the content so that when we return to business as usual, we can hit the ground running as best we can. Teachers will also continue to use Google Classroom to share learning activities specific to their classes. The school is in the process of creating a website that everyone can access to find grade-appropriate, content-based learning activities for students to work on at their own pace. Teachers will be available via email, and in some cases through virtual class meetings, but not expected to provide one-to-one instruction. The shutdown is a great opportunity to both make up missed work and explore topics that pique one’s curiosity. Stakes are a little higher for AP courses, so it is reasonable to expect consistent effort, continued work on assignments, and check-ins for students enrolled in those advanced classes. Yesterday I sent out a survey to students about Chromebook needs. Depending on the volume of requests, we will either have a pick-up this afternoon or we will deliver them to students’ homes. Standardized Testing Early word from the College Board is that they are allowing some flexibility about testing dates for the AP exams depending on how long the shutdown lasts. The May 2nd SAT has been canceled- hopefully registered students would have heard about that via direct email from the CB. The state has submitted a request for a waiver for the 10th grade MCAS so that it can be postponed or canceled. Stay tuned. It is my humble opinion that we will still have the 9th grade science MCAS in biology in June as students have been preparing for it all year. Extracurricular Activities Right now, all extracurricular activities scheduled for the next three weeks have been canceled. The start of the spring sports season has been pushed back to April 27th. Right now, the junior prom is still on for May 2nd but that may change if school does not open by then. General Messages (for everyone, but mostly intended for students to be reinforced by adults) We all need to refer to these next few weeks as the “shutdown” and not a “break.” The purpose of the shutdown is to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, so we all need to do our part as individuals in the battle. That means washing our hands thoroughly, covering coughs appropriately, and practicing social distancing. This last part is really important in preventing “community spread.” While true that young people have not been significantly impacted by the virus, it is irresponsible for them to congregate in large numbers. Please keep social gatherings to a minimum, and if they must happen at all, the groups should not exceed ten kids. It’s important to maintain healthy habits during the shutdown. That means establishing and keeping a routine that includes some outside time and exercise. People feel better physically and mentally when they are productive. Be mindful of screen time and media consumption. Set aside time every day to put the tech down and pick up a book. Or pick up a pen and write down what is going on in this crazy time. You’ll be glad you did someday! Also super critical is keeping a healthy sleep schedule- don’t get into the habit of staying up really late and sleeping until noon because that pattern will make it that much harder to return to the school schedule. Academic Calendar We are currently thinking of keeping Friday, April 3rd as the end of Q3. But we are also looking at the possibility of combining Q3 and Q4 into one grading term and not issuing a Q3 report card. Stay tuned on that topic. The Bridge program for seniors is currently still a “go” for the start of Q4. We are still looking at holding graduation on Sunday, June 7th. SENIORS: Please be sure to continue to check Naviance regarding scholarship information and aplications. Applications will be available for pick up at the high school today until 3. There is a Google classroom set up for seniors for scholarship information; use the code sena736. The deadline for applications is April 9th but subject to change pending the length of the shutdown. Please check in on the Classroom page for updates. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will likely be in through the end of the week and checking voicemail and email remotely after that. Best of luck to you all as we contend with these strange times. Keep washing those hands! Socially distanced, Jonathan Mitchell Principal, Ipswich High School
