Did you know that the first calculators were made out of just gears? In this essay you will learn about how the modern calculator was invented.(1) The modern calculator is a pocket sized device that can compute and calculate complex and simple functions. The original purpose of this device was to be a calculator that was pocket sized and cheaper than the current best model.(3) The current best model was a 55 pound desktop calculator that required power from a wall outlet and was twenty-five hundred dollars.(5) The inventor of the first modern calculator was an engineer at Texas Instruments named Jerry Merryman and his team. Merryman and his team were told by their boss that they needed a calculator that was pocket sized and ran on batteries. Because this was in 1967 Merryman had none of the stuff that he would need for the calculator so they were forced to start at square one.(5) The very first calculator was made out Iof entirely mechanical parts and had no electricity at all. The next calculator took up an entire room, then the next was a missive desktop calculator. After that they finally got to the calculator we know today, the pocket calculator.(6) Like most things the calculator has changed lots from when it was first created. The first electronic calculator would take up a whole room and now we have calculators that can do quadratic equations and graph anything you want it to that can slide into our pocket. Calculators are also used quite often. The market size of graphing calculators alone is 426 million USD and calculators are an extremely helpful tool for anything that has to do with math.(2) In conclusion the calculator is one of the most useful devices that we have. It started as a subtracting machine made way back in the Middle Ages to a massive desktop calculator and then to a weak pocket calculator and now calculators that can be coded by the users and do extremely complex calculations. All of this was started by one man and his team, Jerry Merryman
