Good afternoon! My name is Kalvin and I interned with the UCLA Game Lab. before I began my internship, I imagined the office to be uncomfortable and anxiety inducing. Once I got there and got to know people I realized that I was completely wrong. In the Game Lab, I was met with friendly, welcoming faces and was a warm, laid-back office. I was interested in the work of my organization because I saw the potential for using programing as an artistic tool. Now that I have worked there, I feel more comfortable with the idea of coding and using it for my art. For my internship, my main project was to develop programs through Unity, a game engine and platform. One of my favorite days at the internship was when I first was able to experience using a VR headset. The funniest thing was when we attempted to make our own figurines using some molding clay. The process was difficult in that it took a lot of creativity but it it ended up being an enjoyable experience. Working at the Game Lab, I learned that there are more art mediums beyond the traditional pencil and paper or brush and canvas. Finally, in this program, I had some challenges too. I had to leave my “comfort zone.” For the first time I had to interact with others as coworkers, and I had to acclimate to the office environment. These are experiences that will help me in the future because in the “real world,” I will have to interact with others that I don’t necessarily know. I’m very grateful to my friends and family for supporting me through this process. I also want to thank my supervisors Tyler and Sophia. They helped through mentorship, and of course by providing us with the opportunity to intern at the Game Lab. This was the coolest experience of my senior year! Its an honor to be here with my classmates and teachers of UCLA-CS! Thanks to everyone for celebrating it with me.
