Do NOT Jump Off Swings On a hot summer day, my cousins and I were outside in the backyard playing in the jungle gym. I was with two of my older cousins; Jacob was 6 (the same age as me) and PJ was 15. PJ was pushing Jacob and I on the swing, both of us screaming higher! higher! When I finally had enough of the swings, I demanded PJ to stop the swing so I could safely get off and head to the trampoline. At this time, I was still learning how to do a backflip on the trampoline. When I finally landed it, I called PJ over to witness my great trick. Unfortunately I could not land it anymore; but my six year old self would not give up and would not let PJ look away. My attempts kept getting worse and PJ kept getting even more bored. All the while, Jacob was still swinging on the swing alone, with no adult watching him. Our older cousins (and just older kids in general) liked to jump off of the swings while they were mid air. Jacob had the brightest idea to copy what we had seen and jump off the swings while he was in the air. Unfortunately, he did not land well. As he made contact with the ground, the wood chips surrounding the jungle gym cut him and some even got stuck in his legs and arms. As he was falling, I watched it all go down; saying nothing to PJ who was on his phone now and ignoring my sorry attempts at doing a backflip. The next thing we heard was Jacob screaming and crying at the top of his lungs; crying for his mother who came running out the house. I ran off the trampoline to go comfort my cousin but immediately backed away and started crying too at the sight of his body. Jacobs arms and legs were covered in what seemed like clumpy ketchup and there was even a wood chip lodged in his leg. When his mom picked him up, she revealed the horrors that lay beneath poor Jacob which was wood chips covered in expired hot sauce. We all go inside the house; their mom goes straight to the bathroom to clean Jacob up. And Jacob’s dad was there to scold PJ for not paying attention. When I went to check up on my cousin, he was holding his sister's hand crying as his mom attempted to pull out the wood chip from his leg. Again, I looked away from the horrors that faced me. They eventually got the wood out, and I finally comforted Jacob. Jacob's dad still wanted to go to the hospital in case he still had some wood stuck in his leg. I do not know if he did because Jacob’s sister drove me home but what I do know is that he had to get stitches, to this day, he still has some visible scars, and that there is no longer a jungle gym for his younger siblings to play on.
