Definition of Terms In the context of this debate, Jack is defined as Jack Merridew, the leader of the choir that was part of the larger group of children who crash land onto a deserted island in William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies. An efficient leader is defined as someone who is able to manage a group of people well, making sure that they work well together with minimal internal conflict to achieve a common goal. In the context of this debate, this means that Jack is able to organize his followers to cooperate well together. Let it be made clear that ”efficient” does not necessarily mean that the goal(s) of the leader are good goals for the long run, but it just means that the leader can effectively organize his group to reach the goal of the group, whatever that goal may be. Let it also be made clear that “efficient” does not necessarily mean “moral” or “benevolent”. Main Arguments HEIL!: Jack’s followers are more loyal than Ralph’s. Jack is able to put his hunting goals into motion without conflict, whereas Ralph struggles to organize everyone to build shelter and make a signal fire. Jack is charismatic and knows what to say to capture the interest of his followers, which is part of the reason why a lot of people defect to Jack’s tribe despite Ralph having won the initial vote for leadership.
