YOU SAID:
Dear Prosper School Council, My name is Reggie Rivers. I am a recently graduated student from Prosper High School. I am writing to you because I disagree with the proposal of making it a requirement to for students to bring their own electronic devices to school, also known as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Distractions, cyber bullying and extra expenses are three huge reasons as to why this will cause some serious negative impacts in Prosper High. Distractions due to electronic devices are already a problem in a classroom environment, causing a lot of teachers to ban them from their classroom. Having all the students required to bring their devices to school will make it easier for them to get away with not doing their school work. A teacher can’t be expected to properly focus on working with and teaching the students when they have to continuously attempt to monitor the students making sure they are actually working and not checking their social media or texting their friends. One of the more common forms of bullying takes place in cyberbullying. Being behind a screen gives a person to feel a sense of invulnerability when it comes to harassing others because they are hiding behind a screen. By giving the students regular access to the online world, it brings more opportunities for the bullies at the school to target other students. Since the students will be bringing in their own devices, it will become even harder to regulate the bullying and reinforce the rules. This proposal will also define the hierarchy and the divide between the rich and the poor based on who can afford all the newest technology and who are barely scraping by with what they have. My final reason with disagreeing with this proposal would be the expenses that would come with BYOD. Electronic devices are very high in demand and that also means that the newer and nicest devices are normally pretty expensive to buy and to maintain. Most devices have a certain amount of storage or data that it can hold and you have the option of buying more. How far will the school go to buy, replace, fix and reimburse families when their kids’ are required to bring their personal devices and they lose them? Or if they are stolen? If they break? When the data overages become too expensive for the parents liking? The parents won’t like having to spend even more money on something that most won’t see as something that should be necessary, considering a lot of these parents went through school without being so dependant on electronic devices. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope you consider how distractions, cyberbullying and expenses will negatively impact school life in Prosper High School before making a final decision about BYOD. Sincerely, Reggie Rivers
