Dear ______, I realize that mistakes happen, but I have given you a zero on Exam 2 because you did not take it nor attempt to make it up within 10 days. This is fair because the exam was previously announced and the entire class was held to the same expectation. In regards to the essay, I strongly recommend that you re-read the writing assignment instructions and rubric, as you will find my expectations on citations, as any work that is not your own should be cited. While I understand that you spent a great deal of time on your essay, it did not meet the expectations as set out in the rubric to which you were privy. I would be happy to allow you to fix your essay to meet the requirements and earn a better grade. While this is a 1000-level class that satisfies a general education requirement, I still hold each and every one of my students to the same expectations. The goal of my class is to develop students' historical writing and critical thinking skills. Therefore, it is imperative that students put in a lot of effort in order to be successful. Lastly, I urge you to, in the future, speak to me ahead of time if outside commitments such as work are going to possibly impede with your ability to finish assignments. While I set deadlines for a reason, I am understand that certain circumstances arise but wish for students to be proactive and communicate with me ahead of time as much as possible to come up with a plan going forward.
