YOU SAID:
Dear Ms Heugel, I recently read the new Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It was a good book, although not nearly as good as the original ones. It was by J.K Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. It was a play performed in London and was a sequel to the Harry Potter series. The book was about Harry Potter and his son, who doesn’t quite get along with his father. Albus, Harry’s son, got into Slytherin house and started acting rebellious because of the teasing he received at Hogwarts. When he overheard a conversation with Cedric’s father wanting to get his son back with a ministry time turner, which is illegal and is turned down by Harry. Albus, wanting to prove to himself, his dad, and his classmates, that he can do great things too and went to Amos’s house and said that they would get the time turner and save Cedric. With the help of a girl who claimed to be his niece, they stole the time turner and went back to the triwizard tournament, which is where Cedric was killed. They knew he had to be stopped from winning, which is what brought him to be killed by Voldemort in the first place, and humiliated him in the challenges. When they went back to the present however, it was drastically altered. When he was back, Albus was gone, Harry was dead, the Augurey replaced the ministry, and their cousin Rose ceased to exist. With the help of Snape, and rebels Hermione and Ron, they sent Scorpius back to the tournament and stopped Cedric being humiliated, only to be betrayed by Amos’s niece who actually turned out to be Voldemort’s daughter. She wanted to go back and restore the Augurey and to do that, she wanted to stop her father’s death which was when he attempted to kill Harry. He managed to send a message to Harry when they were in need. Some development with the characters I noticed were when Albus, who in the beginning was spiteful of his dad later learned that his best interests were at heart and that he wanted to be a good father. Harry, who at first was very worried about how to parent Albus, to becoming able to know what was needed of him the be a good person. A common theme throughout the book is probably putting others over yourself. When Scorpius went back to the present after humiliating Cedric, the whole world was messed up. Everyone treated him like a king, Mudbloods were being killed, apparently at his own command, and his aunt and uncle, Ron and Hermione, were both rebels living alone in the Shrieking Shack. When faced with the decision to give up his “kingdom” to save the wizarding world, he didn't hesitate. Like every good book, there is conflict. Some of this is between Harry and his son. After having a fight with Albus, Harry said some hurtful things about Albus, leaving him sad. This would cause more arguments between the father and son in the future. This was quite a large part of the story, as it most likely sparked Albus's desire to do something rebellious against his dad. The argument they had was: Albus: “Listen, I’ve got a lot of packing to do and you undoubtedly have ministry work coming out of your ears, so…” Harry: “Albus, I want you to have the blanket.” Albus: “And do what with it? Fairy wings makes sense, Dad, invisibility cloaks, they also make sense-but this-really?” Harry is slightly heart-broken. He looks at his son, desperately trying to reach out. Harry: “Do you want a hand, packing? I always loved packing. It meant I was leaving Pivet drive and going back to Hogwarts. Which was… well, I know you don’t love it but…” Albus: “For you it's the greatest place on Earth. I know. The poor orphan bullied by his aunt and uncle Dursley…” Harry:”Albus can we please-can we just-” Albus: “...traumatized by his cousin Dudley, saved by hogwarts. I know it all Dad. Blah, blah, blah.” Harry: “I’m not going to rise to your bait Albus Potter.” Albus: “The poor orphan who went on to save us all. So may I say- on behalf of the wizarding world- how grateful we are for your heroism. Should we bow now or will a curtsy do?” Harry: “Albus, please- you know, I’ve never wanted gratitude. Albus: “But right now I’m overflowing with it- it must be the kind gift of this moldy blanket that did it…” Harry: “Moldy Blanket?”You know what? I’m done with being made responsible for your unhappiness. At least you’ve got a dad. Because I didn’t, ok?” Albus: “And you think that was unlucky? I don’t.” Harry: “You wish me dead?” Albus: “No! I just wish you weren’t my dad. Harry: (seeing red) “Well there are times I wish you weren’t my son.” As you can see, this would cause lots of conflict throughout the book, which was a big plot maker. More conflict would be some internal conflict with Harry as he tries to find the reason his scar has started hurting again, while trying to keep his son happy and getting his work done for the ministry. Some other conflict would be fighting Delphi to keep her from keeping Voldemort from attempting to kill young Harry to let him grow more and more powerful, therefore making her more powerful being his daughter. The tone throughout the book is generally pretty grim. With the looming threat of Voldemort’s return and the risk that Harry’s son will run away, things are constantly stressful and overall bad for the characters. With the disappearance of Scorpius and Albus, along with Malfoy’s wife’s death, Malfoy is also under a lot of stress while trying to get everything sorted out and getting all the information he needs from the Ministry to keep his son away from harm. Sincerely, Hayden
