Dear Mrs. Heugel, This letter essay is based on the novel Hollow City by Ransom Riggs. This book is the sequel to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Hollow City is somewhere in the fantasy genre, but it is distinctive in plot and character. I would recommend Hollow City on any young adult reading list or to anyone who likes The Mysterious Benedict Society. In Hollow City, Jacob, the main character, learns much more about who he is and what he means to others. After the end of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Jacob only knows that he and his friends are in danger, along with Miss Peregrine. Jacob soon learns from a peculiar dog, Addison, that he and his friends must find someone who can turn Miss Peregrine back into a human, and save her from becoming a bird forever. He also learns how valuable his power of sensing hollowgast is and what it can do. These things much enlighten Jacob about ]ho he is and who he will become. The theme of Hollow City is that even when you try to do something right, you can’t take for granted that it will turn out well. This passage, in which Miss Peregrine is about to turn back into a human from her bird form, fits this theme exactly. “[Miss Wren] looked frightened - her mouth was open, and so was Althea’s. And then Miss Wren said, ‘No, this can’t be,’ and Althea stumbled, faint, letting the sheet drop. And there on the floor we saw a human form, but not a woman’s…. Then very calmly, the man said, ‘My name is Caul. And you are all my prisoners now.’” This passage shows that when Miss Wren turned the bird back human, they saw it wasn’t Miss Peregrine. They clearly did everything right, getting from an island off the coast of Wales to London and even managing to find Miss Wren, but in the end not everything turned out. This theme is a good one, since it does have good real life applications, but is very often overlooked, making the book that much more distinct. There were multiple conflicts going on in Hollow City. One conflict was the main conflict, the peculiars versus the hollows and wights, evil characters who eat peculiars. The second conflict in the book was within the peculiars. They disagreed on many things, from whether to hitch a ride on the gypsy caravan to whether not Jacob should leave. The final conflict was within Jacob himself. He fought within him whether he should stay or leave once Miss Peregrine was human again. This depth of conflict further developed the story. Hollow City used a very unusual imagery technique that I found a very defining feature of the book. Ransom Riggs used real life black and white photos instead of illustrations. This creatively gave the imagery of a black and white movie. Riggs’s choice to keep Jacob as a silhouette gave the reader the chance to create their own imagery, while showing all the other peculiars, to give the reader something to use when they imagine Jacob, if they so choose. This imagery technique was one of the defining features of this book. Hollow City is a uniquely peculiar fantasy book, which made reading it worthwhile. I normally do not like fantasy like this, but Ransom Riggs’s imagination and depth of the story, along with his imagery technique, made me glad I read Hollow City.
