Circle: (Hannah) Project an image of multiple butterflies found in Wisconsin. Ask the students to gather in a circle for the circle question: What is your favorite butterfly? Introducing the game: Start out by telling the students what the game is called. (metamorphosis) (Austin) Ask the class if they know what metamorphosis is called, if none answer, state that it is another word for transformation; the process of butterfly eggs hatching and transitioning into a butterfly. (Brandon) Describe the gameplay while modeling it: metamorphosis in the form of rock-paper-scissors: everyone will start as eggs and whoever wins will move on to becoming caterpillars, and so on, battling your same life stage. Losers move back to the previous life stage. Eggs who lose are out. Winners are best out of three. Point out the stations in the room for each life stage, to meet others of the same life stage Playing the game: Students will play along with the children, following the rules. Game should take around 2-3 minutes, Afterwards, call out for student to finish their last match and move to the table for their stage. Say that it’s time to review the results. Discussion after the game: Objective: Regroup to talk about different life stages in detail and give facts of those life stages. (Megan/Brandon/Bree) 1 - Ask the remaining eggs to raise their hands. 2. Talk about where the eggs are kept, how many, how long the life stages are. (Tryyn) 3 - Ask the remaining caterpillars (larvae or pupa) to raise their hands. 4. Talk about what they eat, where they are found, appearances, how long this life stage lasts. (Calvin) 5 - Ask the remaining pupae, chrysalis (butterflies) cocoons (moths) to raise their hands. 6-Explain how long the stages last, where it happens, the changes they go through, (Megan) 7 - Ask the remaining butterflies to raise their hands. 8- There are over 60-120 different species of butterflies found in Wisconsin, including several different families, prominent ones skippers, swallowtails, snouts, and brush footed. (I think the main one everyone would be familiar with are the monarchs) The lifespan of these butterflies greatly depend on the species, and with so many, it can be hard to keep track. However, the lifespan also greatly depends on the climates, and with our four seasons weather, it becomes pretty varied. Several butterflies will normally live anywhere from a week to a month, but the monarch can greatly exceed this, even though it cycles through maybe four generations a year. At this point, through March and April, the monarch butterfly is currently laying eggs on the growing milkweed. This is after the ones born last October have actually migrated- living for months in California and Mexico before coming back to our warmer spring climate. Each of the middle generations live a few months or so. (Calvin) The pupa is the stage in a butterfly's (or moth's) life when it is encased in a chrysalis and undergoing metamorphosis. It does not eat during this stage.
