Based on results seen with molecular catalyst, we hypothesize that through using a polymeric overlayer on platinum and nickel electrodes, we will limit the rate of hydrogen evolution. To do this we will define the rate of partitioning (ip, H) and the rate of substrate transport (is, H) through the polymer. To do this we will use rotating disk voltammetry with Pt and Ni disk electrodes (RDEs) coated in a polymer with a known thickness. By altering the thickness of the polymer layer, we will alter the diffusion pathlength, lowering the is, H value for the system while keeping ip, H constant. This will allow us to model the diffusion rate of H+ as a function of diffusion path length. To define the ip, H values for each polymer, we will test the rate of H2 production in solutions with different pH values. Knowing the is, H values, we can back calculate the concentration of protons at the electrolyte-polymer interface and derive the ip, H value for that specific polymer. To further elucidate the mechanism of proton transport through the polymer membrane, we will make use of proton inventory studies which we previously used to study the proton transport mechanism in poly-4-vinyl pyridine.
