YOU SAID:

Back when I was a little kid, a phone to me was just a small video game console. But the history behind phones is a lot crazier than you think. According to wikipedia, a phone is simply a device that can make and receive calls over a radio frequency link. In this speech, I will show the history and evolution of phones, the applications of phones, and the implications of phones. Contrary to popular belief, the first “phone” was actually made by the Italian innovator Antonio Meucci in 1849. Charles Bourseul improved the idea and made something called the “make and break” telephone. While the phone was not as practical as later phones, he created the foundation for many more to come. Because of this foundation, Alexander Graham Bell invented and patented the phone in 1876, after financial backing. And the rest is history. By 1905, the amount of phones wired was 2.2 million, and the number exponentially increased. Then, a major change was made. Using Oliver Lodge’s wireless technology, allowing for wireless calls of up to 150 yards, and Intel Corporation’s single chip microprocessor, the 4004, which allowed for smaller and lighter phones, Motorola gave a wireless phone demonstration to the FCC. From there, mobile phones kicked off. They got smaller and sleeker, from clunky antenna phones to button phones like the famous nokia 3310, to the modern iphones and samsung phones, which are technological wonders in themselves. Obviously, these everyday machines that rival the lunar landing computers have multiple applications. Phones can be used for all types of things. They are obviously used as a communication method. Modern phones can make calls from absurd distances, even across the world. With the successful addition of cameras to phones, videocalls were possible. This allows for families to stay connected and could allow people to reconnect. But phones aren’t just used for communication. Phones have the capability of transforming in a portable arcade, allowing people to install multiple games. Phones can also be used for pictures. Recent phones have had the capability that is close to cameras. This can be used by police officers to capture pictures of evidence, or inspectors to report damages. Lastly, phones could be used in emergency situations. Hotlines, for example, rely on phones to respond to emergencies. 911 uses a phone system to provide help. But with all these uses come at a cost. You see, aside from privacy concerns, there are serious health risks associated with cell phone usage. Users are exposed to a non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can cause heart prolems. Cell phones can actually raise your risk of brain cancer as well. And it might sound absurd, but extreme cell phone usage can cause infertility, hearing impairment, eye problems, infections, and even skin allergies. Phones also affect your mental health. It messes up your sleep schedule and makes you more stressed. Not only this, but it makes it harder to retain information. Furthermore, phones use rare materials that can’t be recycled. Phones are the invention of the century, probably matched only by the wheel. So when I was a little kid absolutely flabbergasted by the amount of games were on my mom’s phone, I couldn’t even begin to understand the complexity and capability of modern phones, from the history, to their applications, to their implications. And while phones still have a long way to go, we can trust that they will always surprise us.
