Wednesday, August 24 No class. Don’t come to school! Monday, August 22 – Tuesday, August 23 You began your North Carolina Regulator Story Diagrams today. Guidelines and notes are available electronically, and you can also use this sample plot diagram to get started. The PowerPoint slides with the pictures we have used in class are available here if you’d like to revisit them or see the ones that we did not use. But your text and illustrations should always be your own! Tuesday, August 16 In addition to continuing your study of the North Carolina Regulators, you are to begin formulating questions you might want to ask Congressman David Price when he visits on August 30. Submit your preliminary questions here, and we will begin revising them tomorrow! Friday, August 12 You may use the paper copy of our current event form that the substitute provides you, or you can return that paper to the substitute and complete an electronic current event form. This current event’s theme is: WAR & PEACE. So pick an article from that section of NewsELA. If you complete a digital copy of the current event, be sure to share it with me at: bridget_dix@dpsnc.net–that’s an underscore, not a period! 🙂 Thursday, August 11 Four tasks: Finish iReady diagnostic business! Finish your current events from Wednesday’s enrichment–and turn them in! Continue working on your colonial letters. Prepare to be awesome and laid back for the substitute tomorrow. Tuesday, August 9-Wednesday, August 10 Use the paper copy of notes and the Venn diagram to compare and contrast the German and Moravian immigrants and their experiences in North Carolina. When you are done, you may begin your colonial letter writing project. You may type it in a Google document, but it must be printed out and turned in to the bin by the end of class on Thursday, August 11! Friday, August 5 – Monday, August 8 We have learned about some of the early settlements in North Carolina, including the Lost Colony, which temporarily discouraged exploration in the region. Today and tomorrow, you will examine the settlement of two new immigrant groups in North Carolina. Groups arrived in different ways, but one of the primary routes at this point in our state’s history is the “Great Wagon Road.” You can scroll down to view this route on a modern road map. For this lesson, your group will analyze two primary sources using the provided graphic organizer: Summary of a report sent to Bethlehem (Moravian) A German immigrant writes home (German) We will read aloud selected excerpts from our first source as a whole class: Diary of a journey of Moravians. At the close of this lesson, you should be able to compare the journeys and experiences of early immigrant groups in North Carolina. You should also be able to explain multiple reasons for their decision to settle in North Carolina. A note on graphic organizers: these are intended to help you gather key points and organize your thinking as you read. They are NOT a contest to see who can copy the most text onto their paper! You should also contextualize this information with your own research.
