An important theme in Antigone is the theme of divine law vs human law. An example of this theme is in the prologue when Antigone tells Ismene about Creon’s decree, and then asks for her help in burying Polynices. Ismene disagrees, and says “O think Antigone; we are women; it is not for us to fight against men” Antigone responds by saying “he (creon) has no right to keep me from my own.” The theme of divine law vs human law is prevalent in this scene because Antigone believes that divine law is above all else, and that Polynices should be given a burial no matter what, but Ismene is too afraid to break human law. This conflict between divine and human law is allegorical for an event that was happening at the time Sophocles was writing the play, the rise of the sophists. The sophists were a group of people who believed in logic above all else, i.e human law but Sophocles, and the rest of greek society, believed in divine law. This is why the chorus empathizes with Antigone throughout the play, the chorus represents the audience, and the audience would empathize with Antigone because she is willing to die for divine law.
