YOU SAID:
American history cannot be separated from world history. Its origins lie in the European expansion into the Western Hemisphere, which helped create an interdependent global economy. People, ideas, and cultures migrated. Over a short span of time, the lives of Europeans, colonists, Africans, and Native Americans became intertwined. The first half of this assignment addresses interactions between Europeans, Native Americans, and Africans, including the economies, cities, alliances, wars, cultures, and governments these people created along the shorelines and borderlands of North America. Colonial development was far from uniform. It was determined not only by the differing physical conditions along the coastline, but by the ideas and interests of those who came. Some migrants sought economic advantage; others came in pursuit of religious freedom. Almost half a million people emigrated against their will before the ink dried on the phrase “all men are created equal.” Some colonies were the property of the Crown; others were gifts to friends of the king, or were the product of business arrangements made by British trading companies. Colonial development was equally affected by the attitude of the English government toward the American settlers. That attitude fluctuated with the vagaries of the English economy, and with relations between England and the other European inhabitants of North America.
